In 2. 00. 4, a satellite detects a mysterious heat bloom beneath Bouvetya, an island about one thousand miles off the coast of Antarctica. Wealthy industrialist Charles Bishop Weyland Lance Henriksen discovers through thermal imaging that there is a pyramid buried 2. He attempts to claim it for his multinational communications company, Weyland Industries, a subsidiary of the Weyland Corporation, and assembles a team of experts to investigate. The team includes archaeologists, linguistic experts, drillers, mercenaries, and a guide named Alexa Woods Sanaa Lathan. As a Predator ship reaches Earths orbit, it fires a beam that creates a passage through the ice towards the source of the heat bloom. When the team arrives at the abandoned whaling station above the heat source, they find the passage and descend beneath the ice. They locate the mysterious pyramid and begin to explore it, finding evidence of a prehistoric civilization and what appears to be a sacrificial chamber filled with human skeletons with ruptured rib cages. Meanwhile, three Predators consisting of Scar, Celtic and Chopper arrive and kill all the humans on the surface. They make their way down to the pyramid and arrive just as the team unwittingly activates the structure. The Alien Queen awakes from cryogenic stasis and begins to produce eggs. When the eggs hatch, several facehuggers attach themselves to humans trapped in the sacrificial chamber. Chestbursters emerge from the humans and quickly grow into adult Aliens. Conflict erupts between the Predators, Aliens, and humans, resulting in several deaths. Celtic and Chopper are killed by an Alien, and Weyland buys Alexa and Italian archaeologist Sebastian De Rosa Raoul Bova enough time to escape from Scar, giving his life in the process. The two witness Scar kill a facehugger and an Alien with a shuriken before unmasking and marking himself with the blood of the facehugger. After Alexa and Sebastian leave, another facehugger attaches itself to Scar due to him not wearing his mask. Through translation of the pyramids hieroglyphs, Alexa and Sebastian learn that the Predators have been visiting Earth for thousands of years. It was they who taught early human civilizations how to build pyramids, and were worshiped as gods. Every 1. 00 years they visited Earth to take part in a rite of passage by which several humans sacrifice themselves as hosts for the Aliens, creating the ultimate prey for the Predators to hunt while being able to survive in the pyramid if overwhelmed, the Predators would activate a self destruct device to eliminate the Aliens and themselves. The two deduce that this is why the current Predators are at the pyramid, and that the heat bloom was to attract humans for the sole purpose of making new Aliens to hunt. Alexa and Sebastian decide that the Predators must be allowed to succeed in their hunt so that the Aliens do not reach the surface. Then Sebastian is captured by an Alien, leaving only Alexa and Scar to fight the Aliens. The two form an alliance and use a self destruct device to destroy the pyramid and the remaining Aliens. Alexa and Scar reach the surface, where they battle the Alien Queen. They defeat the Queen by attaching its chain to a water tower and pushing her over a cliff, dragging the Queen to the ocean floor. Scar, however, is impaled through the torso by the Alien Queens tail and succumbs to his wounds and dies. A Predator ship uncloaks and several Predators appear. They retrieve their fallen comrade and an elite Predator presents Alexa with one of their spear weapons in recognition of her skill as a warrior symbolized by the alien blood Scar burned on her cheek before he died. As the Predators retreat into space, a chestburster with a hybrid form of an Alien and a Predator erupts from Scars chest. ProductioneditAlien 5 and sequeleditBefore 2. Century Fox gave Alien vs. Predator the greenlight, Aliens writerdirector James Cameron had been working on a story for a fifth Alien film. Alien director Ridley Scott had talked with Cameron, stating I think it would be a lot of fun, but the most important thing is to get the story right. 2 In a 2. Scotts concept for a story was to go back to where the alien creatures were first found and explain how they were created this project eventually became Scotts film Prometheus 2. On learning that Fox intended to pursue Alien vs. Predator, Cameron believed the film would kill the validity of the franchise and ceased work on his story, To me, that was Frankenstein Meets Werewolf. It was Universal just taking their assets and starting to play them off against each other. Milking it. 3 After viewing Alien vs. Predator, however, Cameron remarked that it was actually pretty good. I think of the five Alien films, Id rate it third. I actually liked it. I actually liked it a lot. 3 Conversely, Ridley Scott had no interest in the Alien vs. Predator films. When asked in May 2. Scott laughed, No. I couldnt do that. I couldnt quite take that step. 4 Director Neill Blomkamp would eventually go on to pitch his sequel to Aliens. 5DevelopmenteditThe concept of Alien vs. Predator originated from the Aliens versus Predator comic book in 1. Queen that was gestating inside her at the time of her death can be surgically removed from her body. When the resultant Aliens escape their enclosures, the Ripley clone and a group of mercenaries attempt to escape and destroy the Auriga before it reaches its destination Earth. Alien Resurrection was released on November 2. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times felt there is not a single shot in the movie to fill one with wonder, while Desson Thomson of The Washington Post said the film satisfactorily recycles the great surprises that made the first movie so powerful. Plot. Some 2. 00 years after the events on Fiorina Fury 1. Auriga successfully create a clone of Ellen Ripley, using DNA from blood samples taken before her death. They extract from her the embryo of an Alien. Queen that had been growing inside her at the time of her death, and raise it to collect its eggs for further use. As an afterthought, the Ripley clone, marked by a number 8 lasered onto her arm, is kept alive for further study. As a result of her DNA being mixed with the Aliens during the cloning process, Ripley 8 is endowed with enhanced strength and reflexes, acidic blood, inherited memories from Ellen Ripleys past and an empathic link with the Aliens, especially the Queen. A group of mercenaries led by a man named Elgyn and his partner Hillard soon arrive in their ship, the Betty, delivering several kidnapped humans in stasis. The military scientists use them as hosts for the Aliens, raising several adult Aliens for study. The mercenaries encounter Ripley 8, and their youngest member, Call, recognizes her name. Call attempts to kill Ripley 8, fearing she will be used to create new Aliens, but Call is too late the Aliens have already matured and quickly escape their confinement, damaging the ship and forcing most of the crew to abandon vessel, with many being killed in the process. Dr. Wren, one of the ships scientists, reveals that the Aurigas default command in an emergency situation is to return to Earth. Realizing that this will unleash the Aliens on the planet, Ripley 8, the mercenaries, Wren, a marine named Distephano and a surviving Alien host, Purvis, attempt to destroy the Auriga and escape on the Betty. As the group makes their way through the damaged ship, Ripley 8 discovers the meaning of the number lasered on her arm when she stumbles across seven failed clones in the form of hideously malformed AlienRipley hybrids that are being stored on board, the seventh of which is still alive and begs to be killed. Ripley 8 complies, also destroying the other clones as well, before moving to execute Wren for his part in their creation, but ultimately she relents. Eventually, Elgyn, Hillard and another mercenary crewmember, Christie, are killed by the Aliens. Call is shot by Wren when he betrays the group, but she quickly returns, revealing herself to be an android, one of the few to escape destruction following the passage of laws making them illegal. Using her abilities to interface with the damaged ships systems, Call sets it on a collision course with Earth, hoping that the Aliens will be destroyed in the crash. As the remaining survivors near the Betty, Ripley 8 is captured by the Aliens. Taken to the the Queens chamber, she learns that the Queen has gained a human ability from the mixing of their DNA as well now possessing a womb, she can give birth to live offspring without the need for eggs and human hosts. The resulting offspring, which bears a mixture of human and Alien traits, recognizes Ripley 8 as its mother and brutally kills the Queen as Ripley escapes. Wren arrives on board the Betty and makes one last attempt to betray the others and escape the ship, but he is killed when the Chestburster inside Purvis erupts through his head. The others decide Ripley is lost and prepare to leave, but Ripley 8 arrives just as they launch and successfully makes it aboard. However, the humanAlien hybrid also makes it onto the Betty, where it kills Distephano and attacks Call. Ripley 8 confronts the creature, which is calmed by the appearance of its mother, before killing it by using her own acidic blood to breach a window in the Bettys hull, causing the creature to be sucked violently through the small opening and into the vacuum of space. The Betty successfully enters Earths atmosphere as the Auriga explodes over Africa, killing all of the remaining Aliens aboard. Cast. Writing. Following the reaction to Alien. Century Fox considered pursuing a Ripleys dream scenario, whereby a fourth movie would reveal that the events of the third film were simply a nightmare experienced by her. 1 However, the studio ultimately elected to continue the storyline onwards from the third entry. Impressed with his work as a screenwriter, Fox hired Joss Whedon to write the films script. Whedons initial screenplay had a third act on Earth, with a final battle for Earth itself. Whedon wrote five versions of the final act, none of which ended up in the film. The studio initially imagined that the fourth film would center around an adult clone of the character Newt from Aliens. 2 Whedon composed a thirty page treatment surrounding this idea before being informed that the studio, though impressed with his script, now intended to base the story on a clone of Ellen Ripley, who they saw as the anchor of the series. Whedon had to rewrite the script in a way that would bring back the Ripley character, a task he found difficult. The idea of cloning was suggested by producers David Giler and Walter Hill, who opposed the production of Alien Resurrection as they thought it would ruin the franchise. Sigourney Weaver, who had played Ripley throughout the series, wanted to liberate the character in Alien. Ripley to become a figure of fun who would continuously wake up with monsters running around. The possibility of an Alien vs. Predator film was another reason for the characters death, as she thought the concept sounded awful. However, Weaver was impressed with Whedons script. She thought that the error during Ripley 8s cloning process would allow her to further explore the character, since Ripley becoming part human and part alien would create uncertainty about where her loyalties lay. This was an interesting concept to Weaver, who thought the film brought back the spirit of Alien and Aliens. Weaver received a co producers credit and was reportedly paid more for her starring role than the entire production budget of the first film in the series. 3Concept and Design. Among the directors considered for Alien Resurrection were Danny Boyle, Bryan Singer and Peter Jackson, as well as a young Paul W. S. Anderson who would go on to direct Alien vs. Predator. 2 David Cronenberg was also approached. 4 Boyle got as far as meeting the effects supervisors to discuss the film with his producer, but ultimately decided he was not interested in pursuing the project. Jean Pierre Jeunet was ultimately asked to direct, as the films producers believed he had a unique visual style. Jeunet had just completed the script to Amlie and was surprised he was offered the job for Alien Resurrection, as he thought the franchise had finished with Alien. Jeunet, however, accepted the project with a budget of 7. He required a translator as he did not speak much English when filming began. Jeunet hired French special effects supervisor Pitof and cinematographer Darius Khondji, both of whom he had worked with on The City of Lost Children. Jeunet and his crew watched the latest science fiction and the preceding Alien films as reference material, and obtained production reports from the Alien films to study the camera setups. Jeunet was given creative control, contributing several elements to the script including five different endings, although the more expensive ones were dismissed. He also opted to make the film a dark comedy and was encouraged to include more violence.
